Peter Michelena is an L.A. native and graduate of
Art Center College of Design. While at
Art Center studying Illustration,
Michelena developed an interest in photography that would
become the foundation for his future work.
Michelena began his career as a commercial
photographer working on album packages and movie posters. After more than ten successful
years freelancing, Michelena shifted his focus to fine art.
In the summer of 2000 Michelena
opened Melrose Lightspace, a unique, multi-use daylight rental studio in the heart of Hollywood.
In the nine years
that followed Melrose Lightspace has hosted numerous art exhibitions
and performances, and continues to feature
some of the most original and talented emerging
artists in the L.A. area.

Inspired by early photographers, such as
Julia Margaret Cameron and Alfred Steiglitz, Michelena
often uses antique cameras to create his unique, dreamlike images. Michelena's mixed media
work combines his photography with oil paint and other media, such as liquid photo-emulsion
and wax-encaustic, which are applied, removed and re-applied, gradually building texture and
dimension. The results are powerful, multi-dimensional pieces, rich in tone and subtle variations
of color.
